Rumble Strips
HONOLULU — The state Department of Transportation advises Oahu motorists of lane closures to remove the rumble strips along Pali Highway through Nuuanu.
One lane in the town-bound direction near Waokanaka Street and one lane in the Kailua-bound direction near Wyllie Street on the Pali Highway will be closed starting from Thursday, October 9 to Tuesday, October 14 from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. to remove the rumble strips.
The Nuuanu Neighborhood Board voted last month to have the rumble strips removed near Wyllie and Waokanaka streets after some area residents said they were too noisy. Some drivers were also swerving into other lanes of traffic to avoid the rumble strips, creating a safety hazard.
The state installed the rumble strips, as well as permanent speed display signs and fluorescent pedestrian warning signs, and restriped the highway crosswalks after several pedestrians were killed crossing Pali Highway in Nuuanu. The other safety measures of the $397,925 project will remain in place.
A Nuuanu community task force asked the state to install the traffic safety measures in 2000. A speed study done after the traffic safety devices were installed showed a 5 to 7 mph decrease in average speeds along the stretch of Pali Highway.
