Young Drivers
Indiana’s graduated licensing law:
• Learner’s Permit: In order to obtain a learner’s permit, a person must be at least 15 years old and enrolled in driver education for an unvalidated permit; complete driver education for a validated permit or be at least 16 years old and pass a written test for a validated permit. People with learner’s permits cannot drive unsupervised.
• Probationary license: May be obtained after reaching the age of 16 years and 6 months or at least 16 years and 1 month and completion of driver education, holding a learner’s permit for at least 2 months, and passing a driving test.
– Passenger Restrictions: Drivers with probationary licenses may not carry passengers unless supervised.
– Nighttime Driving Restrictions: Drivers with probationary licenses may not drive unsupervised between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. Sunday through Friday, and between 1 a.m. and 5 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
• Full licensure: Nighttime driving restrictions end at the age of 18, passenger restrictions end after 90 days or the age of 18, whichever comes first. Crashes or violations may delay the process.
