Accidents

834 people died in Indiana car crashes in 2003. Car crashes cost the Indiana 4.346 billion dollars in 2000. Alcohol was involved in more than 2 out of 10 of Indiana's car crash deaths. Also, speed was a factor in 26% of Indiana car crash deaths, costing the state 766 million dollars in 2000.

Among all motor vehicle fatalities 644 were passenger vehicle occupants. Of these, 11 were under 5. More than 5 out of 10 passenger vehicle occupants killed had no seatbelt or child seat, including 1 child under 5. Of 81 motorcycle rider deaths, 58 riders were not wearing their helmets. These safety devices are part of Indiana state law because they can and do save lives.
