The state of Massachusetts follows a No-Fault system meaning your insurance company will make payments for your injury claims regardless of fault, up to a specified limit. Massachusetts state law requires a minimum coverage of $20,000 per injured person up to a total of $40,000 for everyone hurt in the accident, and coverage of $5,000 for property damages. This basic coverage is often referred to as a 20/40/5 coverage.
Personal Injury Protection (PIP) in your coverage helps pay for "reasonable and necessary" medical expenses for you and your passengers. Massachusetts state law requires a minimum Personal Injury Protection coverage of $8,000.
Additionally, you can get Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist coverage for any bodily injury caused by an uninsured driver. While Massachusetts state law does not require this coverage, you can purchase this as an optional coverage for added protection.
