Drivers With Disabilities
The Kentucky Council on Developmental Disabilities helped pursue the passing of HB71 during the 2004 Legislation session. This bill is an amendment to KRS 189.990 which is Kentucky's handicap parking law. This amendment relates to the penalty of violations pertaining to handicapped parking laws, increasing the fine from $20 to $100 to a fine of $250.
KCDD's public policy committee is currently working on ways to help implement this new law change. Efforts include; a radio news release and new handicap parking placards used to discourage people from misusing these necessary designated spots. KCDD is currently working with the Center for Accessible Living in Louisville, KY to create more ways of spreading awareness to civilians and law enforcement.
