Granite Construction Inc. announced today that Granite Construction Company, a wholly owned subsidiary, in a joint venture with Sundt Construction, has been awarded the Superstition Freeway Design-Build project by the Arizona Department of Transportation. The value of the contract is $184.3 million. Granite's portion of the contract is $119.8 million.
The scope of the venture includes roadway improvements on US-60 through the east valley cities of Tempe and Mesa; the design and construction of a high-occupancy vehicle flyover structure connecting I-10 to US-60; the widening and replacement of approximately 12 miles of eastbound and westbound lanes to US-60 from the I-10 interchange; the modification of 7 existing bridges; and construction of a pedestrian crossover bridge.
The job requires 1.2 million cubic yards of roadway excavation and the laying of 20,000 cubic yards of aggregate base, 560,000 square yards of concrete paving and 81,000 tons of asphalt pavement. Approximately 32,000 linear feet of storm drain and 75,000 linear feet of curb and gutter will also be laid, and 141,000 linear feet of concrete barrier will be erected. Also included is the demolition and removal of 75,000 square feet of retaining walls and 250,000 square feet of sound walls, with the reconstruction of 280,000 square feet of new retaining walls and 108,000 square feet of new sound walls.
Additional work consists of associated drainage systems, signing, lighting, slope paving, landscaping, utility relocation, and installation of an ADOT Freeway Management System. Work is scheduled to begin May 21 with completion slated for June 30, 2003. The project will increase the capacity of the existing roadway with the addition of general purpose, auxiliary, and HOV lanes.
