Young Drivers
Connecticut has a graduated licensing law.
• Learner’s Permit: In order to obtain a learner’s permit, a person must be at least 16 years old, have the consent of a parent or guardian, and must pass a written test. People with a learner’s permit cannot drive unsupervised.
• Operator’s license: An operator’s license may be obtained after reaching the age of 16,holding a learner’s permit for at least 6 months or 4 months if the person completed driver education, complete a course in driver education or a program of home training while supervised by a parent, guardian, grandparent, or foster parent who has been licensed for at least 4 years, complete a course on safe driving practices, and passing a driving test.
Passenger Restrictions: Drivers with an operator’s license, for the first 3 months, cannot carry passengers other than a licensed parent or guardian who is 25 or older or a driving instructor. For next 3 months, drivers with an operator’s license cannot carry passengers other than a licensed parent or guardian who is 25 or older or a driving instructor and Immediatee family members.
• Full licensure: Driving restrictions end after 6 months of holding a restricted driver’s license. Crashes or violations may delay the process.
