Safety Seats

The Georgia Division of Public Health, Injury Prevention Section (IPS) uses what is called the “Teddy Bear Sticker Program” to identify children potentially saved by one of the more than 4,000 child safety seats it provides every year to low-income families. A distinctive teddy bear sticker is placed on each seat provided through the program. When a first responder encounters a child safety seat at a crash scene, he or she can complete a short form and fax it to the IPS occupant safety program. The form collects information about the responding agency, the child safety seat and the crash, as well as basic demographic information about the child. First responder agencies are encouraged to complete a form for every crash involving a child safety seat, regardless of whether the safety seat was provided through an IPS program. In return for submitting these forms, agencies receive items for their safety programs. If the child safety seat has a teddy bear sticker, the seat will be replaced through the program. In 2005 the Division was able to document ten children likely spared death or serious injury thanks to the car seat program.
