The Interstate & Limited-Access Rehabilitation and Safety Program is a statewide, 10-year program that began in 2001. It expands the Georgia Department of Transportation’s existing pavement preservation program by incorporating all feasible safety improvements, including pavement rehab; additional and upgrade of guardrails, barrier walls and pavement markings, placement of ground-in rumble strips and maintaining a sufficient recovery area within the right-of-way. The goal of the program is to reduce the number of accidents, injuries and fatalities on the limited-access roadway in addition to preserving the integrity of the roadway.

The Interstate & Limited Access Rehab program is part of Georgia DOT’s statewide comprehensive safety plan to reduce the annual number of accidents, injuries and fatalities resulting from vehicles leaving the road by 80 percent. Each year, there is an average of 39,945 accidents, 16,924 injuries and 234 fatalities on Georgia’s interstates and limited-access roadways. There has been almost a 38% increase in these crashes since 1995. Because the accident statistics on injuries and deaths were so staggering the department established a Safety Action Plan which includes 38 initiatives meant to reduce the number of injuries and deaths on our roadways.

The project on Georgia 400 is the combination of three separate projects: 1) the upgrading of the shoulders to full depth to allow bus travel 15 center line miles from I-285 to the Fulton County Line, 2) the upgrading of signs to high intensity reflectivity 37 centerline miles from I-85 to SR 306, and 3) Interstate & Limited-Access Rehabilitation and Safety Program upgrades 15 centerline miles from I-285 to the Fulton County line.
