Safety Testing
Air pollution is a serious public health and environmental issue in metro Atlanta. Stationary sources of pollution from industry and commercial operations continue to face more stringent regulations. A significant amount of pollution, however, is produced from mobile sources including cars and light duty trucks.
Georgia’s Clean Air Force, the state’s Enhanced Vehicle Emission Inspection (I/M) Program, is helping the region reduce harmful vehicle emissions. Since 1996, Georgia’s I/M Program has prevented tons of ozone-forming pollutants and particle pollution from the air we breathe. More than one million heavy polluting vehicles have been identified and repaired.
Thanks in part to vehicle emission testing, the region is beginning to experience measurable air quality benefits. There have been fewer unhealthy air days and, for the first time in 25 years, metro Atlanta is in attainment for the one-hour ozone standard - a federal measurement to determine the point when air becomes unhealthy.
While these are great successes, there is still much more to be done. Georgia’s Clean Air Force remains committed to helping the region work toward better air quality.

Which vehicles require inspection in 2006?
For the 2006 test season, all 1982-2003 model year gasoline powered cars and light trucks (up to 8,500 lbs gross vehicle weight rating) registered in the following counties require an emission inspection: Cherokee, Clayton, Cobb, Coweta, DeKalb, Douglas, Fayette, Forsyth, Fulton, Gwinnett, Henry, Paulding, and Rockdale.
Note: In 2005, model years 1981 through 2002 required an emission inspection.
TEST EARLY
We recommend that you have your vehicle tested four to six weeks prior to the registration renewal date (the vehicle owner’s birthday), just in case you need time to have repairs made.
The three most recent model year vehicles (whether purchased new or used) are exempt from emission inspections.
An emission inspection is valid for 12 months OR one registration renewal, by the same owner.
Newly acquired 1982-2003 model year vehicles within the 13 counties must have proof of a passing inspection within the last 12 months. It is the seller’s responsibility to provide a passing Vehicle Emission Inspection Report (VIR) at the time of sale.
