Young Drivers
Idaho has a graduated licensing law.
• Driver Training Instruction Permit:
In order to obtain a driver training instruction permit, a person must be at least 14 years and 6 months old, have the consent of a parent or guardian, and be enrolled in a driver-training course. People with a driver training instruction permit cannot drive unless supervised by a driving instructor.
• Supervised Instruction Permit:
In order to obtain a supervised instruction permit a person must complete driver training.
People with a supervised instruction permit cannot drive unsupervised.
• Driver’s License:
In order to obtain a driver’s license a person must be at least 15, hold a supervised instruction permit for at least 4 months, drive at least 50 hours (10 of them at night) while supervised, and pass written and driving tests.
• Nighttime Driving Restrictions:
After getting a driver’s license a person may not drive after daylight hours (a half hour after sunset to a half hour before sunrise) unless supervised.
• Full Licensure:
Driving restrictions end at age 16. Crashes or violations may delay the process.
