Rules for Roundabout Safety

  • Speed:  Slow down! The objective of the roundabout is to keep traffic moving and allow for more capacity.  But to do it properly and safely, it must be done at a safe speed.  Posted speed limit is 15 miles per hour.
  • Yielding:  Always yield to traffic in the roundabout and to your left.  Also motor vehicles should yield to bicyclists and pedestrians.
  • Pick your Lane:  Before entering the roundabout be aware of your intended exit and pick the appropriate lane.  For two lanes:  The left hand lane allows for going straight, turning left, or making a U-turn.  The right hand lane allows for going straight or making a right turn.  For a single lane:  Allows for making a right turn, going straight, a left turn, or a U-turn. (see above diagram)
  • Never change lanes or pass in the roundabout.
  • Allow Large Vehicles the extra turning radius needed to navigate the roundabout properly.  Never pass or drive next to a large vehicle in the roundabout.
  • Pay Attention:  Be aware of other drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists.  Do not talk on the cell phone, put on make-up, etc.  Drive defensively!
  • Pedestrians:  Stay in the marked crosswalks and cross carefully.  Even though you have the right of way, don’t expect vehicles to always yield for you.  Do not jump out in front of vehicles expecting them to yield.  Use the island in the middle of the crosswalk to enable going halfway to allow traffic to continue to flow.
