If you are involved in a traffic accident, your seat belt may be the determining factor for whether you walk away from the accident uninjured or not. District 15 statistics clearly show that drivers and passengers who were wearing their seat belts during an accident suffer fewer injuries than those who don't.

Slightly over 75% of the drivers who ride the tollway wear their seat belt. Not wearing your seat belt can prove to be a fatal mistake, particularly if you are involved in an accident. Of those persons who were killed in accidents during 1996, 75% were not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. Only 12% of those killed during an accident were wearing a seat belt.

Your chances of escaping an accident without injury increase dramatically if you are wearing your seat belt at the time of the accident. A full 97% of vehicle occupants who escape an accident without injury were wearing their seat belt at the time of the accident.

Occupants wearing their seat belt during an accident have an 89% chance of escaping even a minor injury. Fewer than 4% will suffer a serious or fatal injury. Wearing a seat belt makes sense, and District 15 officers actively enforce seat belt laws in an effort to protect the patrons of the Illinois Toll Highway Authority.

Not wearing a seat belt dramatically increases your chances of injury or death. A full 3% of vehicle occupants, who are not wearing a seat belt at the time of an accident, will die as a result. Nearly 30% of those not wearing a seat belt suffer a serious or fatal injury. Your chance of injury in an accident while not wearing a seat belt are approximately 50%.
