Rumble Strips

Rumble Strip Projects: Rumble strips are the top priority safety improvement type. In the Transportation Planning Division’s 1999-2000 Highway Safety Program, it was concluded that applying rumble strips on the rural interstate highway routes would generate a positive benefit-cost ratio of 58:1. It is estimated that a similarly high benefit-cost ratio can be achieved for systematic placement of rumble strips on certain rural non-interstate highway routes, where they comply with the department’s design guidelines. These guidelines include required comparison of relative benefits of bicycle use on highway shoulders versus benefits to motorists to have rumble strips on the shoulders. Therefore, continued identification, selection, and programming of rumble strip projects for rural New Mexico highway sections will be a top priority during the next few years.
