Rumble Strips

Rumble Strips are raised or grooved patterns on the road shoulder that provide both an audible warning and physical vibration to alert drivers that they are leaving the road.

Tennessee has been installing rumble strips on all of its resurfacing projects since 1996. For the miles of the interstate system currently without rumble strips, the Tennessee Department of Transportation is beginning a statewide project to install shoulder rumble strips along Tennessee's interstates in early summer, 2001.

Recent nationwide statistics from the Federal Highway Administration indicate run-off-the-road fatalities comprise almost one-third of all fatalities with 15,214 deaths contributed to single vehicle run-off-the-road crashes.
