Bus Safety
- NEVER walk behind the bus.
- When the bus approaches, stand away from the curb and line up away from the street
- Wait until the bus stops, the door opens, and the driver says it's okay before stepping onto the bus.
- Use the handrails to avoid falls.
- Cars approaching a school bus from either direction must stop when the bus displays flashing red warning lights.
- These signals show that children are getting on or off the school bus. Cars should not pass until the flashing red lights and signals are turned off.
- If you have to cross the street in front of the bus, walk on the sidewalk or along the side of the road to a point at least eight giant steps ahead of the bus before you cross. Be sure the bus driver can see you and you can see the bus driver. When you get to the bus driver's side of the bus, stop and look left, right, then left again before continuing across.
- When walking near a bus always stay at least three giant steps away from the side of the bus.
- If you drop something near the bus, tell the bus driver and follow his or her instructions. Never try to pick it up without telling the bus driver, because the driver may not be able to see you.
- Be careful that clothing with drawstrings and back packs with straps do not get caught in the handrails and doors.
- Always stay in your seat when on the bus.
