Design Intersection for Safety

DESCRIPTION: This course consists of a series of six modules that can be presented individually or as an entire package over a three-day period. The course examines various aspects of design and operations and how they affect the safety of an intersection and its various users. The course is designed to be interactive with numerous discussions, exercises, and case studies.

OBJECTIVES: After completing the course, participants will be able to:
1. List the user groups to consider in intersection design, describe user characteristics and how they affect intersection design and safety, and describe approaches to balance needs of different user groups;
2. Determine which intersections have poor crash experience, assess causes of high crash experience or high potential, and describe how to select appropriate countermeasures;
3. Identify key safety-related intersection geometric design decisions, applications, and assumptions;
4. Describe safety issues at signalized and unsignalized intersections, summarize MUTCD requirements for signalizing an intersection, and select appropriate countermeasures to address safety issues at intersections.
