Young Drivers

Utah has a graduated licensing law.

• Practice Permit: In order to obtain a practice permit, a person must be at least 15 years and 6 months of age, have the consent of a parent or guardian, be enrolled in driver education, and must pass a written test. People with a practice permit cannot drive unsupervised.
• Provisional License: May be obtained after reaching the age of 16, completing at least 40 hours of supervised driving experience (10 of them at night), completing driver education, and passing a driving test.
– Passenger Restrictions: Drivers with provisional licenses must not carry any passengers—other than Immediatee family—unless supervised.
– Nighttime Driving Restrictions: Drivers with provisional licenses must not drive unsupervised between midnight and 5 a.m.
• Full licensure: Nighttime driving restrictions end at the age of 17. Passenger restrictions end after 6 months or at 18 years of age, whichever comes first. Crashes or violations may delay the process.
