Drowsy Driving

Most sleep-related crashes happen between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m. (during normal sleeping hours). (National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute)

Teenagers need more sleep than younger children and adults. Many teenagers need at least 9 hours of sleep each night. But most of them get less than 6.5 hours of sleep each night. With school, homework, jobs, sports, and a social life, it is difficult for teenagers to get enough sleep. (National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute)

When a person is sleepy, even a small amount of alcohol can make sleepiness worse. One beer drunk while you are sleep deprived will have the same effect as two or three beers drunk when you are not sleep deprived. (National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute)

If you become drowsy while driving, stop driving. If there is no other choice, consume the equivalent of two cups of coffee, take a nap, or call for a lift. (National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute)
