New York Defensive Driving Online Course FAQs

What is IPIRP?

IPIRP is the Internet Point and Insurance Reduction Program. The program began as a classroom course known just as PIRP. Our online version satisfies all IPIRP requirements and has been approved by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles.

Does this course qualify for point reduction and insurance premium reduction?

Yes. This course is approved by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles to provide both point reduction and an insurance discount.

Who is eligible for point reduction?

If you have received a violation and points within the 18-month period prior to completing the course, then you are eligible for a point reduction. Points for violations outside of this range, including future violations, are not eligible to be reduced. The maximum number of reduced points in each 18-month period is four. Points may only be reduced once per 18-month period.

How do I get my points reduced by taking this defensive driving course?

Once you complete the course, we will notify the New York DMV. At that point, the completion will automatically be entered on your driving record and your active point total will be reduced by up to four points. These points are not physically removed, but they will not count toward a penalty such as license suspension.

How do I verify my course completion has been noted on my driving record?

If you need to verify that the defensive driving course completion is on your record, you may request a copy of your driving record from the DMV.

Who is eligible for an insurance premium reduction?

We will send you a certificate of completion once you complete the course. If you present this certificate of completion to your insurance company or agent within 90 days following course completion, a 10% reduction to your liability, no-fault and collision insurance premiums will begin immediately. This reduction will be retroactively applied to the date you completed the course.

If you present your certificate more than 90 days after course completion, your insurer may issue the discount effective from the date presented.

How often can I take this defensive driving course to reduce my insurance premium?

Following course completion, your insurance discount is valid for three years. To renew your discount, simply retake the Defensive Driving course.

Why was I locked out of the course?

The New York DMV requires this course to use identify validation techniques. If you were locked out of the course, it is most likely because you failed to correctly answer security questions or voice biometrics checks that are used to confirm your identity.

You can reinstate yourself by following the prompts on the screen. If you need assistance, you can contact us 24/7.

What are security questions?

The DMV requires all students to confirm their identity throughout the course. Before you start the course, you will need to answer some multiple-choice questions about yourself. These questions will appear on your screen at several points during your training, and you will have 45 seconds to answer them correctly. You have up to three tries to answer each security question.

If you fail a security question three times in a row, you will be locked out of the course and required to re-register. Please contact customer support if you fail an identity check because of a technical difficulty.

What is voice biometrics?

This course uses a system called voice biometrics to confirm your identity. With this method, you will provide a voice sample over the phone before starting the course. When prompted, you will need to call a phone number on your screen within 90 seconds and provide additional samples that must match your original voice sample.

If you fail a security question three times in a row or fail three voice biometrics checks three times in a row, you will be locked out of the course and required to re-register. Please contact customer support if you fail an identity check because of a technical difficulty.

Do I need to complete the course in one sitting?

No. Our course automatically saves all of your progress. Simply log back in and you'll be able to continue right where you left off.
