The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that six out of ten children who died in traffic crashes in 1997 were unrestrained. To reduce these fatalities, DHSMV works with concerned individuals in federal, state and county government to provide child safety seats to needy Floridians. In Florida, all children under the age of 16 must be buckled up.
Since late 1993, the Saferiders program has provided more than 15,000 seats throughout the state of Florida. Recently, more than 2,200 additional seats were provided through the generosity of Floridians and The $2 Difference program. This program provides safety seats for children in the county in which the donation is given. Floridians can make this donation each time they register a vehicle or renew their registration at their local tax collector's office. The purchase, distribution and training for the installation of the seats is coordinated through the Florida Highway Patrol.
As a result of the success of these two programs - and from spin offs in other states - two child safety seats manufacturers and one non-profit safety agency are offering child safety seats at greatly reduced prices. These programs are designed for individuals who do not qualify for free child safety seats, but for whom the full retail purchase price would be a financial burden.
The following phone numbers and/or addresses will put you in touch with these agencies. The prices these agencies quote include shipping and do not require payment of state sales tax.
