How the Written Assessment Works

The DPS written knowledge examination is based entirely on the Texas Driver Handbook and applies to both learner's permit and first-time license applicants. The assessment consists of 30 multiple-choice questions, and a score of 70% is required to pass. All questions are drawn directly from the handbook.

In some cases, the Texas permit evaluation can be taken online through an approved adult driver education course. Our online driver education programs allow students to take the permit exam after completing the first lesson module.

TX Driver Education Requirements

Requirements vary based on age. Knowing which protocols apply to you will help ensure you meet the requirements before taking the written or road test.

Teens (Ages 14 to 17)

Teens must complete an approved driver education course before applying for a driver's license. Students must finish the first six hours of lessons before taking the examination and applying for a learner's permit. Adults (Ages 18 to 24)

Drivers aged 18 to 24 are required to complete an adult driver education course. Many approved courses, including ours, allow you to learn online and take the permit test as part of the program.

Impact Texas Drivers (ITD) Program

The Impact Texas Drivers (ITD) Program is required for new drivers before taking the road skills assessment. It consists of a short video course focused on distracted driving and must be completed before the examination. The state offers a different version of the program for teenagers and adults.

Drivers 25 and Older

Individuals 25 and older are not required to complete driver schooling and can skip straight to the permit and driving skills tests. But reviewing the handbook and using SafeMotorist's study resources can improve chances of passing the exam on the first try.
