Free Texas Permit and License Guide
Getting ready for your Texas driver's license? Not sure what to study or where to start? You're in the right place. This page gives you access to the official Texas Driver Handbook, along with the SafeMotorist free Study Resource that helps you prepare for the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) written test.
Wondering where the exam questions come from? Every question on the permit exam is taken directly from the driver's handbook. Using these two resources together can help you avoid common mistakes and feel prepared for exam day.
What's Covered in the Texas Driver's Handbook
The Texas Driver Handbook is your go-to tool for passing the written exam, as all questions are based on the manual. It covers rules of the road, traffic signs, signals, markings, speed limits in different zones and key traffic laws.
The handbook also includes safe driving practices like maintaining proper following distances, signaling correctly and sharing the road with cyclists, pedestrians and motorcycles. You'll also read about alcohol and drug regulations — including Texas's zero tolerance policy for minors — along with driver responsibilities such as licensing requirements, vehicle inspections, insurance and how to handle accidents.

How the Written Assessment Works
The DPS written knowledge examination is based entirely on the Texas Driver Handbook and applies to both learner's permit and first-time license applicants. The assessment consists of 30 multiple-choice questions, and a score of 70% is required to pass. All questions are drawn directly from the handbook.
In some cases, the Texas permit evaluation can be taken online through an approved adult driver education course. Our online driver education programs allow students to take the permit exam after completing the first lesson module.

Make studying easier by highlighting the most important information from the official driver's manual. Instead of reading the entire handbook, you can focus on the rules, signs and driving regulations that are most likely to appear on the TX DPS written assessment.
- Rules of the road: Simple explanations of right-of-way laws, lane usage, turning rules and common driving scenarios tested by the DPS.
- Traffic signs and signals: Clear descriptions of regulatory, warning and navigation signs to help you quickly recognize and understand them. This is one of the most heavily tested sections.
- Speed limits and traffic statutes: Summaries of speed limits in residential areas, school zones, highways and construction zones.
- Safe driving and test-critical guidelines: Focused reminders of safety regulations that often lead to exam failures, such as coming to a complete stop at stop signs and red lights. It's important to note that rolling stops result in an automatic failure.
- Alcohol and drug laws: Covers DUI and DWI mandates, including the zero tolerance policy for motorists under 21.

TX Driver Education Requirements
Requirements vary based on age. Knowing which protocols apply to you will help ensure you meet the requirements before taking the written or road test.
Teens (Ages 14 to 17)
Teens must complete an approved driver education course before applying for a driver's license. Students must finish the first six hours of lessons before taking the examination and applying for a learner's permit. These courses are based on the official Texas Driver Handbook and include classroom or online instruction plus behind-the-wheel practice.
Adults (Ages 18 to 24)
Drivers aged 18 to 24 are required to complete an adult driver education course. Many approved courses, including ours, allow you to learn online and take the permit test as part of the program.
Impact Texas Drivers (ITD) Program
The Impact Texas Drivers (ITD) Program is required for new drivers before taking the road skills assessment. It consists of a short video course focused on distracted driving and must be completed before the examination. The state offers a different version of the program for teenagers and adults.
Drivers 25 and Older
Individuals 25 and older are not required to complete driver schooling and can skip straight to the permit and driving skills tests. But reviewing the handbook and using SafeMotorist's study resources can improve chances of passing the exam on the first try.
Meeting all requirements ensures you can move smoothly through the licensing process.
