New Jersey Point Reduction

After you complete the New Jersey Defensive Driving course, the MVC will reduce two points from your driving record as outlined in New Jersey Revised Statutes 39:5-30.9. New Jersey drivers can receive this point reduction once every five years.

While the points are not removed from your record permanently, they will not be counted toward MVC penalties such as a license suspension or surcharge fine. Getting six or more points within the span of three years will result in a surcharge, and your license will be suspended if you get 12 or more points on your current driving record.

To qualify for point reduction, you must have a valid, non-commercial New Jersey driver license and must currently have points on your driving record. You will not receive a point reduction if you completed a point reduction course within the past five years.

New Jersey Insurance Discount

Graduates of the New Jersey Defensive Driving course will qualify for a mandatory auto insurance discount that lasts three years. You could save up to 10% on your insurance premiums. Contact your insurance provider for more information about the discount, including the exact amount.

When your insurance discount expires, you can retake the Defensive Driving course to renew your savings for another three years.
