Does my 10-year-old or older vehicle require an inspection?

Only the following types of vehicles are subject to an inspection, if they are 10 years old or older and are changing ownership:

  • Commercial Vehicles over 18,000 lbs. gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR).
  • Imported Vehicles (Grey Market)
  • Trailers over 10,000 lbs.

Does my out of state vehicle require an inspection?

Your out of state vehicle requires a vehicle identification number (VIN) verification. This can be done at a Full Service DMV Branch Office, with the exception of the Norwalk Office.

However, the following list of vehicles being registered in Connecticut for the first time will require an inspection:

  • Ambulance
  • Composite Vehicle (modified antique and street rod vehicles)
  • Driver Education Vehicle
  • Homemade Trailers (unless previously titled out-of-state with a vehicle identification number).
  • Salvage Vehicles with a ‘Salvage' title (Totaled, Reconstructed, Modified)
  • Service Buses, School Buses and Student Transportation Vehicles
  • Taxi
  • Wrecker

Does my vehicle bought at auction require an inspection?

Only the following vehicles listed below are subject to an inspection if they are 10-years-old or older and are changing ownership:
